Script & sounds

Assamese is written in the Assamese script, part of the Bengali–Assamese family. Start with the বৰ্ণমালা chart — every letter as it is read aloud, ko, kho, aa, oo — then the vowels and consonants with a pronunciation guide for each, and the one habit, schwa deletion, that explains why spelling and speech diverge.
