Track 2 of 12
The shell in practice
Make the shell do the work.
Intermediate 6 lessons Prerequisite: Finish Foundations first, especially pipes and redirection.
Typing commands one at a time gets old when you need to do the same thing twice. This track turns commands into scripts and scripts into scheduled jobs. You will also learn the text tools that make short work of big files.
By the end, you can write a small script, run it on a timer, and process a large file without opening it.
Lessons in this track
- 01 Shell scripting basics Turn a string of typed commands into a script you can run again and again.
- 02 Processes and jobs Find what is running, stop it cleanly, and keep long tasks in the background.
- 03 Environment variables and PATH The values your shell remembers for you, and how PATH decides what runs.
- 04 Text processing with sed and awk Two small tools that reshape text on the way through a pipe.
- 05 Archives and compression Bundle files into one, squeeze them smaller, and unpack them safely.
- 06 Scheduling work with cron Let the phone run your commands on a timer, even while you sleep.
