ExifTool

Read, write and strip the metadata inside media files

About

ExifTool reads, writes and strips metadata in media files. Camera settings, GPS coordinates, timestamps. Use it to check what a file really is, or to scrub personal details before sharing.

Install it

pkg install exiftool

Run this inside Termux. If the package is already present, pkg will say so and do nothing.

Commands worth knowing

5 of the invocations you will actually reach for. Tap the copy button to put one on your clipboard.

exiftool photo.jpg Print every metadata tag in a file. Camera model, capture time, location.
exiftool -GPSPosition photo.jpg Show only the stored GPS position. The fastest way to check for location data.
exiftool -all= photo.jpg Remove every writable metadata tag. This is how you scrub personal details before publishing.
exiftool -csv *.jpg Collect metadata from many files into comma-separated rows. Ready to open in a spreadsheet.
exiftool -Make -Model photo.jpg Read only the tags you name. Keeps output to the fields you care about.

Worked example

Run exiftool -Make -Model -DateTimeOriginal photo.jpg and this is what you should see.

termux
$ exiftool -Make -Model -DateTimeOriginal photo.jpg
Make : samsung
Model : SM-A125F
Date/Time Original : 2024:03:11 16:42:09

Tag names are matched without regard to case.
