kill

Send signals to processes to stop or reload them

kill Processes and system GPL-2.0-or-later

About

kill sends a signal to a process, most often to ask it to stop. The pkill variant that ships alongside it selects processes by name rather than identifier. Learn it so you can end a hung task cleanly instead of restarting the whole device.

Commands worth knowing

6 of the invocations you will actually reach for. Tap the copy button to put one on your clipboard.

kill 4321 Send the default polite termination signal to a process by its identifier. It gets a chance to clean up.
kill -9 4321 Force a process to end immediately when it ignores the polite request. Cleanup is skipped.
kill -l List the names and numbers of every available signal. Pick the right one.
kill -HUP 4321 Ask a process to reload its configuration without stopping. Many background services support this.
kill -STOP 4321 Pause a running process in place. Resume it later with the continue signal.
kill -0 4321 Check whether a process exists and whether you are allowed to signal it. Nothing is actually sent.
