About

Vim is a configurable text editor with separate modes for navigating and typing. Your hands stay on the keyboard. It is available almost everywhere, a dependable choice for editing on remote machines.

Install it

pkg install vim

Run this inside Termux. If the package is already present, pkg will say so and do nothing.

Commands worth knowing

6 of the invocations you will actually reach for. Tap the copy button to put one on your clipboard.

vim notes.txt Open a file for editing, or start a new buffer if it does not exist.
vim -R notes.txt Open a file read-only, so you cannot change it by accident.
vim -p one.txt two.txt Open several files as tabs you can switch between.
vim -o one.txt two.txt Open several files in horizontal splits, shown at once.
vim -c set-number notes.txt Open a file and run a command on startup. Here, turn on line numbers.
vim +42 notes.txt Open a file with the cursor already on a given line.

Worked example

Run vim +/TODO notes.txt and this is what you should see.

termux
$ vim +/TODO notes.txt
~
~
~
"notes.txt" 128L, 4096C

The tilde marks lines past the end of the file; the status line reports the file size.
