Zsh

Extended Bourne-style shell with smart completion and globbing

About

Zsh is an extended Bourne-style shell with smarter completion, globbing and prompt customisation. Many people prefer it over Bash for interactive work. On Termux, install it and start it once to set up its files.

Install it

pkg install zsh

Run this inside Termux. If the package is already present, pkg will say so and do nothing.

Commands worth knowing

5 of the invocations you will actually reach for. Tap the copy button to put one on your clipboard.

zsh Start an interactive session. Your current shell stays untouched until you exit back to it.
zsh -l Start as a login shell. It reads your profile files and sets up the environment a fresh terminal would.
zsh -f Start without reading any startup files. This isolates a problem to your configuration, not the shell.
zsh -n setup Check a script for syntax errors. Not one line runs.
zsh --version Print the installed version. Confirms which release and feature set you have.

Worked example

Run zsh -c "print -l a b c" and this is what you should see.

termux
$ zsh -c "print -l a b c"
a
b
c
